HDHJA Scholarships,
Grants, & Awards 

Katie Grundeman Junior Rider Grant

One $1000 grant will be awarded per year to a junior rider who demonstrates exemplary horsemanship, sportsmanship, leadership and work ethic, as well as financial need. Prospective recipients must be current HDHJA members for the year in which they are nominated for the grant. Nominations must be submitted by email to simonestarnes@gmail.com no later than December 15.

** Any adult HDHJA member may request a nomination form and may nominate any junior HDHJA member. If an adult (parent, etc) that is not a member of HDHJA wishes to nominate someone, the nominee’s trainer should submit the nomination form.

HDHJA Scholarship Award

One junior or amateur member of HDHJA will be awarded a scholarship of $500, generously donated by Timberline Farm. The awarded scholarship is to be used for furthering equine related education or participating in equine events approved by the HDHJA board. Applicants must be junior or amateur HDHJA members at the time of submitting their applications. All applicants will be required to take the horsemanship quiz that is included on the application in order to be considered for the scholarship. The quiz is an open note quiz. Application and horsemanship quiz must be submitted by email to timberlinefarm@live.com by December 15.

The Don Kerron Sportsmanship Award

A Perpetual Trophy is to a junior or amateur rider exemplifying sportsmanship as well as horsemanship throughout the current show season. Don Kerron was a well-known professional horseman of the Pacific Northwest. His father established the Portland Riding Academy, a social mainstay of Portland society, which Don eventually took over. He continued on with his career establishing Sunwood Farm in 1969, which he ran for over 20 years producing many top riders. Later he and his wife Kathy moved to Central Oregon and continued to pass on his knowledge and love for the sport.

The Kirsten Chiasson Volunteer-of-the-Year Award

A Perpetual Volunteer-of-the-Year Plaque will be awarded to any member or parent volunteer. In honor of Kirsten, who in the short time as a HDHJA member, was always willing to help out wherever needed and really believed in making it fun for our young riders. Nomination forms MUST be submitted no later than December 15. Nominees will be voted on by active HDHJA Board Members.

HDHJA Programs, Scholarships, and Awards

 

Don Kerron Sportsmanship Award

 This perpetual trophy is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards banquet to a junior or

amateur rider who has exemplified sportsmanship and horsemanship throughout the

show season.

 Don Kerron was a well known professional horseman of the pacific northwest. His

father established the Portland Riding Academy, which he took over before establishing

Sunwood Farm in 1969. He produced many top riders during his time in Portland, and

later moved to Central Oregon with his wife Kathy, where he continued to pass on his

knowledge and love for the sport.

by active HDHJA board members.

Kristin Chiasson Volunteer of the Year Award

 This perpetual trophy is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a member,

parent, or volunteer who contributes to the success of the organization’s horse shows,

events, and overall community.

 Kristin Chiasson was a HDHJA member who was always willing to help the HDHJA

community in any way, and who believed in making HDHJA a fun and positive

experience for the young riders of the community.

 Nominations open January 1, and close November 1. Nominees are voted on by active

HDHJA board members.

Katie Grundeman Junior Rider Grant

 This $1,000 grant is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a junior rider

who demonstrates exemplary sportsmanship, horsemanship, leadership, and work

ethic. The funds must be used to further the winner’s riding education or achieving

their competition goals.

 The rider awarded the Katie Grundeman Junior Rider Grant is required to volunteer for

HDHJA as a Junior representative, and their responsibilities may include social media

posts, promoting HDHJA grants & awards, and assisting at horse shows, events, and

fundraisers.

 This is a nomination based award. Parents, trainers, and adult members of HDHJA may

nominate a rider between January 1 and November 1. Nominees are voted on by the

HDHJA Special Awards Committee.

Meridian Peaks HDHJA Scholarship

 This $500 scholarship is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a junior or

amateur member of HDHJA. The application includes a horsemanship quiz, which will

be considered while selecting the winning applicant.

 Applications are available between January 1 and November 1. Applications are

processed by the HDHJA Special Awards Committee.

 

USHJA Zone 9 Outreach Festival

 Dates: September 5-8, 2024

 Location: Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum, WA

 What it is: a regional championship for the Outreach riders of Washington and Oregon.

 How to qualify: all horses and riders that accrue point in HDHJA shows between January

1, 2024 and September 1, 2024 are eligible for the USHJA Zone 9 Outreach Festival.

 In an effort to promote Central Oregon horses and riders, HDHJA will offer financial

assistance on a limited basis. This may include assistance with transportation costs,

stabling, and/or training. Applications must be submitted by July 1, 2024.

USHJA National Affiliate Championships

 Dates: November 11-17, 2024

 Location: South Point Equestrian Center, Las Vegas, NV

 What it is: a national championship for junior and amateur members of USHJA Affiliate

Organizations and Outreach Programs. The USHJA Affiliate Championships will include

2’ and 2’6” hunter and equitation divisions, as well as jumpers from 0.70m through 1m.

 How to qualify: USHJA allows HDHJA to send two riders from each division. HDHJA

members who are interested in competing must notify the HDHJA board of directors

before August 1, 2024 to be considered for the Affiliate Championships. If more than

two riders are interested, the two riders that have accrued the most points at HDHJA

shows will be selected to go to the Affiliate Championships.
