Don Kerron Sportsmanship Award

  • This perpetual trophy is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards banquet to a junior or amateur rider who has exemplified sportsmanship and horsemanship throughout the show season.

  • Don Kerron was a well known professional horseman in the Pacific Northwest. His father established the Portland Riding Academy, which he took over before establishing Sunwood Farm in 1969. He produced many top riders during his time in Portland, and later moved to Central Oregon with his wife Kathy, where he continued to pass on his knowledge and love for the sport.

  • Nominations open January 1, and close December 1. Nominees are voted on by active HDHJA board members.

Kristin Chiasson Volunteer of the Year Award

  • This perpetual trophy is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a member, parent, or volunteer who contributes to the success of the organization’s horse shows, events, and overall community.  

  • Kristin Chiasson was a HDHJA member who was always willing to help the HDHJA community in any way, and who believed in making HDHJA a fun and positive experience for the young riders of the community.

  • Nominations open January 1, and close December 1. Nominees are voted on by active HDHJA board members.

Katie Grundeman Junior Rider Grant

  • This $1,000 grant is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a junior rider who demonstrates exemplary sportsmanship, horsemanship, leadership, and work ethic. The funds must be used to further the winner’s riding education or achieving their competition goals. 

  • The rider awarded the Katie Grundeman Junior Rider Grant is required to volunteer for HDHJA as a Junior representative, and their responsibilities may include social media posts, promoting HDHJA grants & awards, and assisting at horse shows, events, and fundraisers.

  • This is a nomination based award. Parents, trainers, and adult members of HDHJA may nominate a rider between January 1 and December 1. Nominees are voted on by the HDHJA Special Awards Committee.

Timberline Farm HDHJA Scholarship

  • This  $500 scholarship is awarded at the HDHJA Year End Awards Banquet to a junior or amateur member of HDHJA.  The application includes a horsemanship quiz, which will be considered while selecting the winning applicant.  

  • Applications are available between January 1 and December 1. Applications are processed by the HDHJA Special Awards Committee.

USHJA National Affiliate Championships

  • Dates:  November 11-17, 2024

  • Location:  South Point Equestrian Center, Las Vegas, NV

  • What it is:  a national championship for junior and amateur members of USHJA Affiliate Organizations and Outreach Programs.  The USHJA Affiliate Championships will include 2’ and 2’6” hunter and equitation divisions, as well as jumpers from 0.70m through 1m.

  • How to qualify:  USHJA allows HDHJA to send two riders from each division. HDHJA members who are interested in competing must notify the HDHJA board of directors before August 1, 2024 to be considered for the Affiliate Championships.   If more than two riders are interested, the two riders that have accrued the most points at HDHJA shows will be selected to go to the Affiliate Championships.
